Classic cars: No such thing as 'too reliable' - how a blown gasket was avoided on my GTI | Wheels

Wheels24 contributor Stuart Johnston has been running his 1985 Golf GTi Mk II as a Sunday classic for the past five years and it's been nothing but reliable. Until recently, when his gauge overheated on a day he needed it the least.

I've been running my 1985 VW Golf GTi Mk II as a Sunday classic for the past five years, and it's been a reliable runner. The only time it broke down was under my carport when it refused to start soon after lockdown was announced in late March 2020. That time the fuel pump gave out, and I detailed my home repair on that item for Wheels24 when I used a Toyota Quantum canister in the VW plastic pump housing to get things mobile again.

I like to joke that the only thing I could criticise the GTi for is that it's too reliable! I've owned many classics, and there is always that feeling of uncertainty (and consequently, excitement) as you set out, not knowing if the darned thing will get you home again.
